Breathwork Protocols

Evidence-based breathing practices for nervous system regulation, sleep preparation, and circadian support.

The breath is the one component of the autonomic nervous system that we can control consciously. This makes it the most accessible and immediately effective tool available for shifting physiological state: moving from activation to calm, from sympathetic dominance to parasympathetic ease, from wakefulness to readiness for sleep.

The protocols in this library are selected and sequenced for members of the Nidra Sleep Pathway™. Each protocol includes an evidence summary, step-by-step instructions, audio guidance, and notes on when and how to use it within your protocol.

02How Breathing Affects Sleep

How Breathing Affects Sleep

Slow, diaphragmatic breathing activates the vagus nerve, increases heart rate variability, reduces cortisol, and shifts autonomic nervous system balance toward the parasympathetic state. These changes directly counteract the physiological hyperarousal that maintains chronic insomnia.

Breathing practices also influence carbon dioxide tolerance, which affects sleep architecture and the frequency of nocturnal arousals. Many people with chronic insomnia are habitual over-breathers: their baseline breathing rate and volume are higher than optimal, creating a state of mild chronic hyperventilation that sustains sympathetic activation.

03Sleep Preparation ProtocolsThese protocols are designed for use in the 30 to 60 minutes before bed.

Sleep Preparation Protocols

These protocols are designed for use in the 30 to 60 minutes before bed. They include extended exhale breathing, box breathing, and 4-7-8 breathing, all of which have been studied for their effects on pre-sleep arousal and sleep onset latency.

04Nocturnal Arousal ProtocolsShort protocols (5 to 10 minutes) designed for use when you wake during the night and cannot return to sleep.

Nocturnal Arousal Protocols

Short protocols (5 to 10 minutes) designed for use when you wake during the night and cannot return to sleep. These practices quickly reduce the anxiety and physiological activation that follow nocturnal waking and help restore the conditions necessary for sleep reinstatement.

05Daytime Regulation Protocols

Daytime Regulation Protocols

Protocols for use during the day to manage stress accumulation, regulate the nervous system, and support the parasympathetic recovery that sets the conditions for better sleep that night.

06Advanced Protocols

Advanced Protocols

For members who have built a foundational breathwork practice, these advanced protocols include coherence breathing, extended Buteyko training sequences, and breath-based practices from the yogic tradition that address deeper patterns of respiratory dysregulation.
